3. Horace Pinker - Our Lips Are Sealed (Go-Go's)

2. Ribbon
3. Yeah, It's Beautiful Here Too
4. Her Royal Fisticuffs
5. European Medicine

59: Sklash

This episode features The Clash's reggae influences, including their covers of Junior Murvin's "Police & Thieves" and Coxsone Dodd's "Armagideon Time".

(And yes, I realize that The Clash was influenced by reggae and not specifically ska, but it made for a better title since 35% of all ska bands begin with "Sk-"...)

1. (White Man) in Hammersmith Palais
2. Police & Thieves
3. The Guns of Brixton
4. Armagideon Time
5. Revolution Rock

4. Fashion Victim
5. Take Back

52: Guitar Hero Wish List

I recently got Guitar Hero for my birthday, and I'm totally hooked (as a combined music nerd/video game geek should be). I'd have a hard time picking songs I would want to be in the game, but here are five by bands that (I think) have not made it into any of the various versions of GH.

1. The Ventures - Slaughter On Tenth Avenue
2. Bad Brains - I Against I
3. Samiam - Viewpoint
4. Quicksand - Unfulfilled
5. Man or Astro-man? - Interstellar Hardrive

3. Jawbreaker: Into You Like A Train (Psychedelic Furs)
4. J Church: Planet Earth (Duran Duran)

30: Early Wire

I was going to do a podcast for Wire, but I was having a hard time choosing five songs from their early recordings/b-sides album alone, so I limited this to their early years (before their first breakup). Wire were more of an "arty" punk band in the late 70s, and eventually evolved from their minimalistic guitar-rock sound to incorporate keyboards...not to mention write songs that were longer than a minute or two.

1. Just Don't Care
2. Ex-Lion Tamer
3. 3rd Millenium Girl Rhumba
4. Two People In A Room
5. On Returning

29: Title Tracks 1

If you're going to name your album after a song on it, it had better be a good song. Like these...

1. The Clash: London Calling
2. The Smiths: The Queen Is Dead
3. Ted Leo & The Pharmacists: Hearts Of Oak
4. Art Brut: Bang Bang Rock & Roll
5. Bad Religion: No Control

22: Tim Armstrong

Tim Armstrong might not have a good voice, but it's definitely distinct. He got his start with Operation Ivy (going by the name "Lint"). After that band broke up, he went on to success with Rancid, and recently had a weird rap-punk side project Transplants.

1. Operation Ivy - Unity
2. Rancid - Detroit
3. Bad Religion - Television
4. Rancid - Let Me Go
5. Transplants - Diamonds And Guns

20: Lookout! Records

I was a big fan of pop-punk growing up, and Berkeley, CA could be considered its birthplace. At the very least, some of the best bands came from the Bay Area. But even if a great pop-punk band wasn't from California (Screeching Weasel from Chicago, The Queers from New Hampshire) they often ended up on Lookout! Records.

Lookout! releases a lot more than just pop-punk, especially in more recent years (although I think they're in financial trouble...how did they mismanage money from Green Day's early releases?). But here are five songs by bands that come to my mind when I think of Lookout.

1. The Mr. T Experience - At Gilman Street
2. Green Day - Disappearing Boy
3. Operation Ivy - Here We Go Again
4. Tilt - One Day
5. The Queers - Another Girl

19: Bass-Playing Lead Singers

A friend posed the question: besides Geddy Lee (of Rush), who are some lead singers who play bass? My mind quickly went blank, and after thinking for a little while I got the two other obvious ones: Paul McCartney (Beatles, Wings) and Les Claypool (Primus). Here are four others -- after starting off with the band who caused this issue to be raised in the first place.

1. Rush (Geddy Lee) - Kid Gloves
2. The Police (Sting) - Next to You
3. small factory (Alex Kemp) - Expiration Date
4. NOFX (Fat Mike) - Total Bummer
5. Motörhead (Lemmy Kilmister) - Ace of Spades

4. Screeching Weasel - The American Dream
5. Black Flag - American Waste

16: Unnecessarily Long Song Titles

Man or Astro-man? alone have some of the longest song titles in music, including "Spectrograph Reading Of The Varying Phantom Frequencies Of Chronic, Incurable Tinnitus" and "Obligatory Part 2 Song In Which There Is No Presently Existing Part 1, Nor The Plans To Make One". But I chose a different one, along with four others:

1. Minutemen - Do You Want New Wave Or Do You Want The Truth?
2. The Kinks - Nothin' In The World Can Stop Me Worryin' 'Bout That Girl
3. The Beatles - Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
4. Jets To Brazil - "Your X-Ray Results Have Come Back From The Doctor And We Think We Know What The Problem Is"
5. Man Or Astro-man? - Song Of The Two-Mile Linear Particle Accelerator Stanford University, Stanford, California

4. Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't Have)?
5. Frank Black - Whatever Happened To Pong?

04: Bob Mould

I really like Hüsker Dü, and I am a huge fan of Sugar. In between and after those two bands, Bob Mould released solo albums. Sinko episode 04 follows Bob's career in five songs.

2. Hüsker Dü - Friend, You've Got To Fall
3. Bob Mould - See a Little Light
4. Sugar - Fortune Teller
5. Bob Mould - Paralyzed

03: Drummers

Who doesn't like a good drummer? Sinko podcast #3 listens to five great drummers -- guys who don't just keep the beat but add energy, personality, and subtle fills that I love to hear. These are songs I like to hear just to concentrate on the drums.

1. The Police (Stewart Copeland) - One World (Not Three)
2. Sunny Day Real Estate (William Goldsmith) - Theo B
3. Smashing Pumpkins (Jimmy Chamberlain) - Cash Car Star
4. Sinkhole (Chris Pierce, who also sings) - Leaner Days
5. The Bad Plus (David King) - And Here We Test Our Powers of Observation

01: Dave Smalley

For this episode I focus on an old favorite of mine, punk rock vocalist Dave Smalley.

Dave started with Boston hardcore band DYS, but my song choices begin with his second band, DC's great Dag Nasty, go through his days with All and his band Down By Law, and end with a cut from 2002's Dag Nasty reunion.

1. Dag Nasty - Values Here
2. All - Skin Deep
3. Down By Law - Right or Wrong
4. Down By Law - No Equalizer
5. Dag Nasty - Bottle This
